Petrus Cornelius Bester

Short bio:

Piet Bester grew up on a farm in the Orange Free State. After matriculation, he did national service (conscription). Piet joined the South African Defence Force, attended the South African Military Academy, obtained various degrees, and completed the University of Johannesburg’s Doctoral Programme: Leadership in Performance and Change. He is also a registered industrial psychologist and has completed various military courses, including the Joint Senior Command and Staff Programme and Security and Defence Studies Programme, as well as a postgraduate diploma in security management at the University of the Witwatersrand. Piet is a former senior lecturer at the University of Stellenbosch’s Faculty of Military Science and is a Research Fellow at the same institution. His research interests include leadership, integrity, performance enhancement, test construction, and national security.

Beyond the horizon: Charting the course of natural intelligence amidst rising artificial intelligence (AI) in warfare

Abstract:

This keynote will address the question of what will happen to natural intelligence if artificial intelligence (AI) increases steadily in the context of military operations. The presenter will explore the dynamics of natural and AI integration in warfare, such as its impact on military cognition and the military mind, human-AI collaboration, navigating the future battlefield, the AI-natural intelligence interplay on the battlefield, cognitive convergence, and the coexistence and fusion of natural intelligence and AI.
